How to create a form on your website

A form lets visitors send you something through your website: a question, a booking request, feedback after an event. Forms are built inside an ordinary article, so if you can create an article you’re most of the way there already.

Building your form

Read this before you share your form

Every field must have a name. A field saved without one silently discards whatever people type into it, and there is no way to get those responses back. As soon as your form is published, submit a test response yourself, filling in every field, and check it arrives in the web office before you share the form with anyone.

  1. Create an article in the group where you want the form to live (see our guide on creating and publishing an article).
  2. Add a short introduction so people know what the form is for.
  3. Click in the contents where the first field should go, open the form options on the toolbar and choose a field type.
  4. Pick the right field for each answer: a text field for short answers, a text area for longer ones, checkboxes for yes/no or pick-several lists, radio buttons or a dropdown for pick-one lists, plus ready-made name, address, phone and email fields.
  5. Give every field a name as you add it, and tick the mandatory option on any field people must fill in.
  6. Add a send button. The form can’t be published without one.
  7. Publish the article, then do your test submission straight away.

Good to know

  • In your test, choose every option on every field: that sets the order the response columns appear in when you view them in the web office.
  • A contact form means you never have to publish your email address, which cuts down the spam you receive.
  • Forms aren’t the right tool for everything. Bookings that take payment should go through a payment page, and capturing people’s details for your database is a job for a profile editor. Raise a ticket if you’re not sure which you need.
  • Once responses start arriving, see our guides on viewing form responses and getting them emailed to you.
