Modules you can add to an article

Modules are the building blocks you can drop into a page to display live content. This is a plain-English rundown of everything in the module picker, in the same two sections the picker uses; for the click-by-click, see our guide on how to add a module to an article.

The Popular modules

  • Article: displays one chosen article inside this one, handy when the same piece of content, like shared terms, needs to appear on several pages.
  • Articles List: lists published articles from your whole site, one group, or everything carrying a particular tag. This is what powers most news and blog-style pages.
  • Calendar: shows upcoming events from the current group, the whole site, a specific group or a tag.
  • Gallery: displays the images from a group as a slideshow or a grid.
  • HTML: a block of your own HTML, for anything the other modules don’t cover.
  • Map: shows a map, with or without a marker. The obvious choice for a ‘find us’ page.
  • Media List: lists audio, video or document files (PDFs, Word documents) from a group or tag. Ideal for sermon archives and downloadable resources.
  • Media Player: embeds one audio or video file so it plays right there in the page.
  • Payment: embeds a payment page, for giving or paid sign-ups.
  • Profile Editor: lets new people register and existing members update their own details.
  • Resource Calendar: shows which resources, like rooms or equipment, are booked and when.

The rest, under ‘Other’

  • Article Links: shows the associated links you’ve added to the current article.
  • Blog: displays articles in a blog format.
  • Breadcrumbs: a trail showing where the current page sits in your site’s structure.
  • Comments: shows the latest comments from different parts of the site.
  • Cookies Notification: displays a message highlighting your cookies policy.
  • Create Sub-group: a link for creating a sub-group.
  • Directory: lists organisations from a directory group, with or without a map.
  • Document Editor Link: a link straight to the document editor.
  • Hotpicks: displays the hotpicks from your Shop.
  • Image: shows a single fixed image, or a random one from a set.
  • Join Group: links for visitors to join, or leave, a group.
  • Polls: shows any active polls in the current group.
  • Rotas: displays the published rotas from the current group.
  • RSS Reader: displays a feed from another website.
  • Search: a search box for your whole site or one part of it.
  • Send Message: a link that starts a private message thread with a user.
  • Site Address, Site Charity Number, Site Email, Site Logo, Site Name and Site Phone: each simply prints that detail from your site settings wherever it’s placed, so a contact page never goes stale when the details change.
  • Tag Cloud: the most-used tags on your site or in a group, each linking to the matching content.

Good to know

  • Most modules let you choose where their content comes from: the current group, a specific group, or a tag. That one setting is usually the difference between a module showing everything and showing exactly what you meant.
  • Popular and Other contain different modules, not the same ones twice: Popular is the shortlist of the modules most articles need, and everything else lives under Other, so if you can’t see the one you want, open the Other section.
  • The site-details modules (address, phone, logo and friends) do their best work in site templates, where they keep every page’s header and footer accurate, but they’re available in articles too.
  • If a module you expected doesn’t appear in your picker, raise a support ticket and we’ll take a look with you.
