Why aren’t my app notifications arriving?

Notifications are the reason most churches install the app in the first place, so it is worth understanding who gets them and who does not. The short version: notifications go to people who have the app installed and are logged in. Nothing is broadcast to the general public.

Working through the checks

  1. Check they have actually installed the app on their phone rather than bookmarked the website. Our guide on installing the app covers this.
  2. Check they are logged in. Someone browsing as a guest can see your public content, but they are not known to the system, so there is nobody to notify.
  3. Check their phone is allowing notifications for the app. Phones ask for permission the first time, and it is easy to tap the wrong answer. The setting sits with the app in the phone’s own settings, not in Hubb.
  4. Check they are in the group the message went to. A message sent to one group only reaches that group’s members.
  5. Check the message actually sent. If it was scheduled, it may not have gone out yet.

Good to know

  • People do not need the app open to receive a notification. It sits in the background like any other app on the phone.
  • If someone has the app on more than one device, they need to be logged in on the device they expect the notification to arrive on.
  • Clearing browser data or signing out of everything on a phone can quietly log someone out of the app. If notifications stop for one person and nobody else, that is worth checking first.
  • Notifications are a nudge, not a filing system. Anything people need to keep should also live somewhere they can find it later, such as an article or an event.
