How to create a voucher code for your shop

A voucher code turns an offer into a private discount: it only applies when someone types the code at the checkout. Perfect for a thank-you to a partner, a deal agreed with one bulk buyer, or a code you share in a mailing.

Creating a voucher code

Read this before you save

The voucher code is what keeps the discount private. Save the offer without the voucher option ticked and the discount applies to every shopper on your live site immediately, so double-check the code is attached before you save, especially on anything generous.

  1. In the shop, go to the item the discount should cover and add a new offer. To cover a whole range, add the offer on the category instead.
  2. Give it a title and description as usual, and set the criteria: what has to be bought for the code to work, for example at least 50 items from the category.
  3. Tick the voucher code option and add your code. Pick a word that’s easy to pass on, and set the dates it’s valid for; a deliberately short window, say a week, is a good nudge to use it.
  4. Set the reward: a percentage or an amount off, capped at a number of items if you want a limit.
  5. Save, then share the code with the person or list it’s for.

Good to know

  • A code isn’t single-use: it works for anyone who has it, as often as they like, until it expires. If a code gets passed around more widely than you’d like, cancel the offer and it stops working straight away.
  • If you’d rather not rely on a code at all, an offer can instead be restricted to members of a group you choose, using the ‘Require membership of group’ option on the offer. Only logged-in members of that group get the discount, so it’s the better route when you want to reward a particular set of people rather than whoever happens to hold a code.
  • Voucher discounts only apply to the items; delivery is still charged at your normal rates.
  • A discount on an event or donation runs through payment groups, which is a separate feature; see how to offer discounts and voucher codes for those.
