How to add an item to your shop

Your shop is organised into categories, and each category holds items: the books, cards and resources people actually buy. Adding a new one takes a few minutes, and most of that is writing a good description.

Adding an item

Read this before you add an item

A new item goes on sale to the public as soon as you create it, so have the price right before you save. If it isn’t ready for the world, take it off sale straight away and finish it in peace.

  1. Log in to your web office, click the shop icon and choose the category the item belongs in. Categories work much like the groups on your website: from a category’s ‘Tasks’ you can create, rename, move or delete categories, so build the shelf before you stock it.
  2. Open the category’s list of items and choose ‘Tasks’, then the option to add a new item. Pick the type: a physical item that gets posted, a digital item such as a PDF or recording, or a donation item where the buyer chooses what to pay.
  3. Give the item a title, an image and a priority. Priority influences where it sits in listings, so save the highest setting for the items you most want seen.
  4. Write the two descriptions: the short one appears in category listings, and the full one appears on the item’s own page under its ‘Full Description’ tab. Short and punchy wins the listing; detail belongs in the full version.
  5. Set the price. Payment is normally taken when the order is placed.
  6. If you use stock control, enter the quantity you have; it counts down as the item sells.
  7. Save, then check the item on your live shop.

Good to know

  • Selling the same thing in colours or sizes at the same price? Item options give the customer a dropdown on one item page. Options can’t carry different prices though, so an A4 and an A6 version priced differently need to be separate items.
  • A donation item is “pay what you can”: you set a suggested price and the buyer can change it at the checkout, which suits resources you’d rather give away than not.
  • If the category has offers running, a new item in it picks them up automatically, so double-check the offers before adding an item that shouldn’t be discounted.
  • Physical items can have a weight set, which matters if your delivery charges use it.
