How to update the APEX template

The APEX template uses four folders of images on the homepage. You’ll find them under the Media tab on the root group.

Use the right image sizes

Upload your images at the sizes given below. If they’re the wrong size, the homepage won’t display correctly for your visitors.

Slideshow images

The slideshow images live in the ‘Hero Slideshow’ folder, and you can add whatever images you need. The standard size is 2000 pixels wide by 750 tall. They can be taller if you like, but keep them all the same height, or you’ll get a grey band under the shorter ones. There’s a guide to uploading an image if you need it.

The caption on each image sets its text and its button. The parts are separated by asterisks: the first is the title, the second the strapline, and the third the button text. The button only shows if the image has a link, and there’s a guide to adding links if you need it.

Feature images

The ‘Feature Images Top’ folder holds the three images shown under the ‘Welcome to our Church’ text, at 800 pixels wide by 400 tall (made larger than needed so you can reuse them elsewhere without losing quality). Add and remove as you like. Like the slideshow, each has a title, summary and button, separated by asterisks.

Editing the APEX feature images

They’re shown in alphanumeric order, so renumber them to change the order. The section further down the homepage, under ‘Get Involved’, works in exactly the same way, but its images come from the ‘Feature Images Bottom’ folder.

The media section

The media section between the two feature blocks uses an image called ‘background’ in the Banner Images folder, the same size as the slideshow (2000 by 750). To change it, select the image and use the ‘Replace this image with a new one’ task, keeping the new one the same size and in JPG format. It updates when you refresh the homepage.

Editing the APEX media background image

To change the audio played from this section, open the article in the root group called ‘HomePage Design: Recent Talk HTML’, edit the purple module (the pencil icon) and choose the audio file you’d like played when visitors click ‘Listen’.

Content page banner images

Content pages on APEX have a banner image that uses the group name as its title, again 2000 by 750. It’s set on the root group and inherited by all sub-groups, but you can override it for an individual group.

Editing the APEX content page banner image

To do that, open the group’s settings (the cog, top right), go to Custom Group Fields, check you’re on the right group, choose ‘Override inherited value’ and click the pencil to pick the new image. Tick ‘Inheritable’ if you’d like sub-groups to inherit it too.
